My 2 year old and I did a little fine motor practice today, sort of by accident. We poked fuzzy sticks through a colander!
I picked up a pack of fuzzy sticks for $1.50. I stood in my kitchen looking around trying to figure out what to do with them. Luckily my colander was sitting on the counter top.
I sat down on the floor with my colander turned upset down and slowly started poking the fuzzy sticks through the colander holes. Evan quickly joined in. I didn't have a plan or any expectations on where this activity would go. He did his own thing. I didn't ask questions. I didn't hound him. He named the color of each stick as he poked it through. He even started counting each one as he went along. He took them out and gathered them in his hand and did it all over again. I just sat and watched. He covered his legs in them then rolled around the room with them. He tossed some at me then I tossed them back and he laughed his contagious laugh. He even helped with clean up, handing me each stick, one at a time.
This activity kept his interest for about 30 minutes, which is an eternity in toddler time.
